Renewable Gas Returns to the MasterChef Australia Kitchen
As MasterChef Australia fires up its “Back To Win” season tonight, renewable gas is making a sizzling return to the set, marking the second year running and reflecting growing interest in the potential for renewable gas as part of Australia’s energy mix.
Through a collaboration with Australian Gas Networks (AGN) – part of Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) – alongside Jemena, ATCO and Solstice Energy, the MasterChef Australia kitchen will be demonstrating biomethane for cooking on the kitchen stovetops throughout the series, with renewable hydrogen gas also making a one-off special appearance.
Like any great recipe, it’s all about what’s in the mix. Put simply, biomethane is made from organic waste, and renewable hydrogen is produced using renewable energy and water, offering low emission alternatives to natural gas that can be used in a range of applications including in the kitchen.
Cathryn McArthur, Executive General Manager, Customer and Strategy at AGN, said the return of renewable gas to the MasterChef kitchen provides the opportunity to lift awareness of these increasingly important renewable fuels and to demonstrate to Australians how they can operate in practise.
“Since opening our first hydrogen production facility in South Australia in 2021, we’ve welcomed over 5,000 visitors to the facility - highlighting the growing interest around these exciting energy solutions.
“This interest continues to build, with other renewable hydrogen projects online or under construction in Gladstone and Wodonga, alongside renewable gas developments led by other companies in Perth and Sydney.
“Biomethane — which is being used in the MasterChef kitchen — is gaining momentum as a renewable energy source that can be delivered through the existing gas network infrastructure, to displace natural gas and lower emissions across homes, businesses, and industry.”
This month, AGIG marked a major milestone by signing an agreement to connect the first biomethane project to our South Australian gas distribution network, paving the way for more renewable gas to flow to homes and businesses across the country.
We’re excited to see renewable gas back on the MasterChef menu this season, helping bring culinary creations to life while highlighting its potential in Australia’s energy future.
