Tanami natural gas pipeline success creates another infrastructure milestone for AGIG

The pivotal role played by the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) in the successful Tanami natural gas pipeline project – built on budget and commissioned ahead of schedule – is another key milestone for one of the nation’s leading providers and operators of key energy infrastructure.

Speaking today at the official opening of Newmont Goldcorp’s Tanami Power Project, 540km north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, AGIG’s Chief Executive Officer, Ben Wilson, said the Group was proud to be involved in providing Newmont Goldcorp with natural gas to reduce power costs and carbon emissions at its world class Tanami operation.

“Gas is an indispensable fuel in Australia – both directly and for power generation – and today it is very low emissions compared to electricity generated from diesel or coal,” Mr Wilson said.

“The decarbonisation challenge is huge and many solutions are needed for Australia to meet its emission reduction targets, including gas stepping up to play its part,” he said.

“Developing the hydrogen economy will also play a key role and momentum around hydrogen is building with burgeoning research and development underway.

“Commercial hydrogen production is achievable and can decarbonise Australia’s energy mix while at the same time accessing export markets.

“Australia – including the Northern Territory – is ideally placed for hydrogen export to North Asia,” he said.

Construction of the Tanami natural gas pipeline has been one of the most significant projects and investments undertaken in Australia by AGIG, adding to the Group’s diverse energy and infrastructure operations across every mainland state and the Northern Territory.

“Significantly, construction of the AGIG owned and operated Tanami natural gas pipeline is contributing not only to the continuing strong performance of this longstanding, major Australian underground gold mine, but also to growth in the Territory,” Mr Wilson said.

“We look forward to AGIG’s continuing involvement in delivering such vital projects to the benefits of all Australians.”
